The state of New York has 62 Counties and each County can issue a birth certificate. In order to apostille your birth certificate, you can either mail in what you currently or you can contact the County Clerk’s office for instructions on how to obtain a new certified copy. We recommend that you mail in what you currently have because obtaining a new birth certificate can take several months. For example, obtaining a new birth certificate from New York County can take months. If you do decide to obtain a new one, be sure to also request an exemplification letter. An exemplification letter is an additional certificate that authenticated the official who has signed your birth certificate.
